IARC Scientific Publication No. 161: Air Pollution and Cancer



Emissions from motor vehicles, industrial processes, power generation, the household combustion of solid fuel, and other sources pollute the ambient air across the globe. The precise chemical and physical features of ambient air pollution, which comprises a myriad of individual chemical constituents, vary around the world due to differences in the sources of pollution, climate, and meteorology, but the mixtures of ambient air pollution invariably contain specific chemicals known to be carcinogenic to humans.
Recent estimates suggest that the disease burden due to air pollution is substantial. Exposure to ambient fine particles was recently estimated to have contributed 3.2 million premature deaths worldwide in 2010, due largely to cardiovascular disease, and 223 000 deaths from lung cancer. More than half of the lung cancer deaths attributable to ambient fine particles were projected to have been in China and other East Asian countries.
The IARC Monographs Programme convened a multidisciplinary Advisory Group that included epidemiologists, toxicologists, atmospheric scientists, cancer biologists, and regulators to make recommendations for the development of a series of Monographs on air pollution. This book provides the updated state-of-the-art overviews from this Advisory Group on topics related to exposure characterization, atmospheric and engineering sciences, epidemiological studies on cancer, results of pertinent cancer bioassays, and data elucidating potential mechanisms of carcinogenicity of compounds related to air pollution

Vinculación entre exposición a vapores de Diesel y cancer de pulmón

In a study of non-metal miners in the United States, federal government scientists reported that heavy exposure to diesel exhaust increased risk of death from lung cancer.

The study was carried out by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both parts of HHS. The results were distributed in two papers on March 2, 2012, from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and they will be posted to the JNCI website on March 5, 2012

The IARC Monographs on the evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans

The IARC Monographs identify environmental factors that can increase the risk of human cancer.

These include chemicals, complex mixtures, occupational exposures, physical agents, biological agents, and lifestyle factors.

National health agencies can use this information as scientific support for their actions to prevent exposure to potential carcinogens.

Interdisciplinary working groups of expert scientists review the published studies and evaluate the weight of the evidence that an agent can increase the risk of cancer. The principles, procedures, and scientific criteria that guide the evaluations are described in the Preamble to the IARC Monographs.
Since 1971, more than 900 agents have been evaluated, of which more than 400 have been identified as carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic, or possibly carcinogenic to humans.

El Laboratorio del Radon de Galicia

El Laboratorio del Radón de Galicia, dependiente de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, se dedica  al estudio de las características y efectos de la exposición de las personas al radón, como problema de salud pública

La toxicidad del radón es debida a su radiactividad, ya que es un emisor de partículas a (He++) que producen ionizaciones en el seno de la materia celular.

Se considera que  el radón es la segunda causa de cáncer de pulmón; solamente el tabaquismo produce más muertes.

El radón está clasificado por la IARC como cancerígeno. Ver: monografia 43 de IARC
